Interesting facts from the area of storage

Internal memory (RAM)

The internal memory in computer systems is called working memory or RAM (Random Access Memory). Data that is currently required for processing is stored here. It serves as intermediate storage between the processor and the hard disk. The data can only be held temporarily. If the computer is switched off, the data is lost.

In the past, SIMM or EDO RAM components were mainly used. Today, DIMMs with e.g. SD, DDR, DDR2,DDR3 or DDR4 SDRAMs are used.

  • DDR2 SDRAM ... was developed to reduce power consumption and improve signal quality and thus system stability.
  • DDR3 SDRAM ... There was an increasing demand for faster memory with low power consumption. This led to the development of DDR3 SDRAM.
  • DDR4 SDRAM ... DDR4-SDRAM are equipped with several technological improvements, such as higher clock frequencies.

The now common motherboards can address up to 32GB RAM if the operating system is installed in the 64 bit version.
